Why A Selkirk Rex Cat?
Temperament
They will win over all they meet. With a sunny, positive outlook, they become friends with one and all. They are never in a bad mood. Tolerant and pleasant, they make great family pets. All they need is a warm embrace and a lap to be happy.

Oh, those curls!
The Selkirk Rex is known as the "cat in sheep's clothing".
The most amazing feature is the silky, relaxed curls. They are seen in both a long haired variety as well as a short haired variety. The long haired cats are curls and curls. Short haired cats are curls and waves. Either way, it is impossible not to want to run your fingers through that incredible coat! Curls that fall into a soft fluff as your fingers glide through. They also come in an impressive array of colors and patterns. What more could you possibly need?

Grooming
These curly fluffs take minimal grooming. A combing with a wide tooth comb to get out any dead hair or crumbles is all that is needed. If you feel the need to bathe your cat, then a washing in a gentle shampoo, towel dry and then watch the curls come back as they air dry.

What makes a Selkirk Rex look like that?
The breed was founded in 1986 by Jeri Newman, an American Persian breeder. Having found and adopted a curly mongrel cat at a local shelter in Montana, she experimented with breeding this curly girl, she named Miss Depesto, to a Persian. All the kittens were curly, which confirmed the curly gene was a dominant gene. The curly gene is called the "Rex" gene. Jeri named the breed after her stepfather, Selkirk, and the Selkirk Rex began to flourish using Persians and Exotic shorthair cats as outcross for the breed.
In the early 2000's, the Selkirk Rex came to Europe. At this time, there were a majority of British Shorthair cat breeders, and the British were used for outcross.

What we see today is that culmination of Persian & British influences, producing a lovely cat with soft curly coat, and a round head with short ears.
Add to that a beautiful, open expression and a cheeky smile, and you have the magical Selkirk Rex.
